We are dedicated to the careful preservation of the Town’s official records, vital records, and historical documents for the benefit of not only current but also future generations.

The Town Clerk’s Office is the center of local government. We work as a team to ensure that everyone who seeks assistance or services from our office benefits from the collective knowledge of our experienced staff.

The functions and services that the Town Clerk’s Office provides are wide ranging and
include:

  • Clerk to the Board: Recorder of minutes to all Town Board Meetings
  • Registrar of Vital Statics: Recorder of all Births, Deaths & Marriage Applications occurring within the Town.
  • Records Management Officer: Custodian of all Town records, responsible for active files, storage and retrieval of inactive records, and the careful maintenance of archival material.
  • Records Access Officer (RAO): The Town Clerk is designated as the records access officer and has the duty of coordinating the Town’s response to public requests for access to records pursuant to the New York State Freedom of Information Law (FOIL)
  • Filing Officer: Maintains records of adopted Town Ordinances and Local Laws, Town Oaths of Office, petitions, proof of publications, annual budgets, assessment rolls, fiscal reports, notices of lien, notices of highway defects and claims against the Town. Additionally, maintains public signboard, advertises and receives bids for purchase of materials and services and files burial permits.
  • Licensing Agent: The Town Clerk issues numerous State and Town licenses and permits.
  • Notary Public: As a courtesy to our residents, we offer free notary public services during our regular business hours. (Please note there is currently no notary in the Clerk’s Office, we apologize for the inconvenience.)

Dog Licensing
New York State requires all dogs to be licensed upon reaching the age of 4 months. Owner must provide a current rabies certificate and a spayed/neutered certificate if the dog has been spayed or neutered.

Spayed/Neutered – $15.00

Unspayed/Unneutered – $25.00

A $5.00 late fee will be charged on the 15th day after the license due date.

Special Dog Permits-More than three (3) dogs:
If you have more than three (3)  dogs at your residence you are required to apply for a Special Permit. For more information download the Town of Chenango Dog Laws.

Marriage Licenses

**Please call the Town Hall to confirm you have the correct paperwork and to check availability of appointments with the Town Clerk**

Anyone getting married in the State of New York must purchase a Marriage License at least 24 hours prior to the ceremony. The license is good for 60 days. Couples must appear in person together with the following documents:  A valid drivers license or state issued ID card, and birth certificates. If either party has been married before, documentation on what ended all prior marriages must be presented (ie: death certificate, divorce decree, annulment documentation).  Cost: $40.00

Accessible Parking Permit
Disabled person must complete form MV-664.1 and have their physician complete their portion. Present the completed form along with a valid driver’s license to the Town Clerk for issuance of tag. www.dmv.ny.gov/disabled.htm

Sporting Licenses

Resident and non-resident sporting licenses are available for purchase with proof of previous purchase or hunter safety certificate and a valid driver’s license.

Gaming
For eligible charitable organizations, applications for Games of Chance may be downloaded at the following website: www.gaming.ny.gov

 

Your Marriage Certificate is a legal document that you will be using for many purposes throughout your lifetime.  Please take a moment to review it carefully for any errors including names, places, dates, etc.  If you find an error, please contact the Town Clerk’s office immediately so a correction can be made before your marriage license is filed with the New York Department of Health.

If at any time you require another copy of your marriage license, you can obtain one from our office for a fee of $10.00.
